Note: You’ll see, “Libertad” means “Freedom” in Spanish but it is also used as a person’s name. Libertad Lamarque is... well, I don’t remember, I think is a Mexican actress or singer, anyway it’s just one of my habitual puns (or sort of) I find very difficult to translate so I at least explain them.
What is freedom?
It’s the power of act according to our own will. In freedom they take part two senses of “power": power of the “I’ll do it because I want to and nobody can stop me" kind and the “I got the means to do it" kind. If we are allowed to, we have decided to do it, but we have no way to do it, that lack is limiting our will.
About will, as it can be influenced... can we be “free to...” in that aspect? What about self determination?
In several aspects our freedom is limited and will is not an exception. The simple act of taking a decision, no matter it may be “our decision”, is the result of letting an option to have more influence than the other ones. If we were “influence free” then we would not be free at all: we would be the most rigid beings on this world. If we put it in terms of self-determination vs fate (predefined) well, I’ll ask you: how can you tell the difference? In what kind of trans-dimensional inventory can you corroborate that path you have so autonomously chosen o will choose is a different one? In fact, our fate, however deep is engraved on steel, we can barely intuit or guess it. And if it is about fate... this previous post.
What do we have to do for being freer? What do we need?
Two milligrams of dragon paw’s scrapings, blood from... just kidding! Perhaps a little common sense is enough. The problem is we are so used to quantify things. Besides, as it was explained, freedom itself has no value. We simply are... advantageously... free when our actions correspond to the will of our wishes. If it were a matter of omnipotence, omnipotence itself is limited by the impossibility of not being omnipotent.
